Effects Of Divorce On Children: Are Kids Resilient?

Effects Of Divorce On ChildrenA question that I hear frequently in my work with families that are going through divorce is…

Are kids resilient?

Parents going through divorce are wondering… If we do nothing else but divorce, will everything just be okay?

I wanted to share this topic with you because it comes up frequently, and when it’s presented to me, it’s asked not so much as a question, but more like a magical wish.

So what are the effects of divorce on children?

Are kids resilient?

I wish I could just say “Yes” to all the parents out there who are asking themselves if it’s just going to be okay – if my kids will just be resilient, however I can’t.

The answer is not so simple… But you can…

  • Minimize the effects of divorce on your children.
  • Help them navigate through the divorce.
  • Help them have a healthy relationship with the other parent.

Kids continue to grow and live, even when parents part. However, children to different degrees are affected by a family’s divorce. It’s the parents responsibility to minimize the effect.

You have a responsibility to your child to help them navigate through the stages of divorce and to find a healthy solid foundation in having two homes, and also, supporting them in a healthy relationship with your ex and with their family.

So will they be okay?

You influence that. You will make the journey okay for your kids, and you will do this by being proactive and communicating, discussing, and supporting your child now and in the months and years ahead as your family navigates through divorce.

One of my resources that you can share with your child that helps you navigate through divorce is my book Felecia’s Family Divorces.

PS: What’s unique about my book is that children get to express their own thoughts and feelings. It’s very helpful and revealing that way, not only for the child, but for parents as well.
