Prison psychologists are paid significantly more than their private-sector counterparts, according to a new report.
Key points:The average psychiatrist and psychologist is paid $17,000 a year and the average licensed school psychologist is $17.25, according the report by the Institute of Public Affairs (IPA).
Key pointsPrivate-sector psychologists make an average of $17 millionA private-practice psychologist makes an average $17mA licensed school psychology psychologist makes $17 per hourThe Institute of Private Psychology and the Institute for Research in Education, Education, and Welfare (IREDW) have launched a joint project to investigate what motivates people to work in the private sector.
They’ve produced a report titled The New Economy: How the Private Sector Makes More Money Than the Public Sector.
It found that a range of factors, including health, career and social standing, were cited as reasons people choose to work for a private- or public-sector employer.
“There’s a very good reason for people to choose to be a professional,” said IPA director Dr Michael Rafferty.
“They’re looking for work that’s going to make them feel good and secure.”
A range of studies have found that working for a public- or private-school-based psychologist can lead to better outcomes than working for an institution that is run by a private firm.
However, the IPA’s report found that “most of the psychological benefits associated with a career in the public sector are due to other factors” such as higher pay, higher earnings and better healthcare.
“The public sector is a good employer, but it’s not a great employer, said Dr Raffery.”
Most of the mental health benefits associated to working in the healthcare sector are probably due to the increased cost of healthcare, and it’s really difficult for private firms to match that cost.”‘
I don’t want to work with them’Dr Rafferie said that while he had not seen evidence that psychologists were a bad choice for people looking to make a career change, it was important for psychologists to be “educated on what they’re being paid, what they get paid for, and what it will be like when they retire”.”
It’s not an easy job.
I don’t like to work there, I don of course want to do it, but there’s a lot of stress, there’s very little opportunity to work and we’re not getting the best bang for our buck.
“Private-practice psychologists were also paid more than other professions, according, with an average pay of $16.25 per hour.”
That’s a huge amount of money,” Dr Raffie said.”
It takes a really high level of education to get into that kind of work, and we don’t know how much they’re actually getting paid, because they’re not public-speaking, they’re private-speaking.”‘
They should be doing more’Dr Nick Balsillie, a licensed psychologist, said the IPA had found that psychologists could be more effective if they were trained in a different field.”
If we were in a health setting and we were working with an internist, we would want to learn a different skill set.
“What if we were training a psychologist, instead of an intern?,” Dr Balsills said.
Dr Raffies added that while psychologists could make an important contribution in their community, he did not believe they were the best option for individuals wanting to become psychologists.
“A lot of the people who are doing their training in a particular field and going into a psychotherapeutic setting, it’s about having that type of education, it needs to be something that they’re able to pass on to their child,” Dr Taggart said.
