Posted November 08, 2018 08:20:53 A child psychologists salary in Texas could top $20,000 a year.
That’s according to a report by the Child Psychology Society of America that analyzed the salaries of nearly 600 child psychologists.
The report shows that some of the largest paychecks come from Texas, while others come from the state of Illinois.
That means child psychologists in Texas are receiving salaries far above the national average, the study found.
According to the report, the average annual pay of a child psychologist in Texas was $20.5 million.
The study’s authors, who include psychology professors from Texas A&M University, the University of Illinois and the University at Buffalo, say the salary data is a result of the fact that child psychologists are the primary providers of child psychology services in the state.
The researchers analyzed salary information for over 1,000 child psychologists employed in Texas and concluded that a child psychology professional in Texas is earning over $20 million annually.
The most common reason for a child psychologists’ salary increase is to recruit new clients, said Susan Brown, the lead author of the report.
Other pay increases include a reduction in staff hours, and a decrease in the number of therapists that are needed, Brown said.
“Child psychologists in a state like Texas have to do a lot of things differently than other child psychologists, because there’s a lot less money in child psychology,” Brown said in an interview with the Austin American-Statesman.
She said child psychologists also tend to have a higher rate of depression and anxiety than other professionals, making them vulnerable to workplace stress.
Some of the most common reasons for a change in a child psychotherapist’s salary are a reduction or elimination of clinical responsibilities, or changes in training and education, the report found.
In Texas, there are over 40 child psychologists per 1,200 residents.
The average salary for a practicing child psychologist is $20-24 million, according to the Texas Association of Child and Family Therapists, which represents the state’s child psychologists and supports them.
Child psychologists have a high attrition rate compared to other professions, Brown told ABC News.
She added that some child psychologists do have a positive relationship with families and therapists.
“I know I’ve had some very positive interactions with the families I’ve worked with,” she said.
But Brown said the state has also seen an increase in suicides among child psychologists over the last few years, particularly those that are not trained to care for children.
“It is a problem that is not being addressed at the state level,” she added.
